Employment opportunities in the Information Age
Employment can be impacted by technology and the efficiency of said technology.
Positive impacts
Increase in the efficiency of technology in the workplace may lead to workplaces becoming more economical. They will also create jobs as people will be required to construct, sell and operate the technology.(1)

people who apply for jobs may increase. This means competitiveness will increase in the working society. Technology now means that people can work from home and upload the product of their work to the Internet. This is possible because the type of work people do is rapidly changing, going from a lot of work based in agriculture and manufacturing to work based on Information Technology such as creating websites for companies or technological support in the workplace.(2) The change in the type work happened over a number of years: in the 1970s many jobs moved from agriculture to manufacturing as more farmyard machinery took their places, and then in the 1990s many jobs moved from manufacturing into the area of information technology as a lot of the manufacturing process became automated.(5) It is also possible to work long distances away from the 'office' for example, video conferences being held over the internet and giving someone music lessons over the internet.(2)

Many people may retain their jobs but their position may change in the workplace. An example of this is a night watchman becoming a CCTV operator or a filing clerk becoming a database operator. This may require a period of retraining but shouldn't affect their working life too much.(3)

Businesses are trying to make technological processes as efficient as possible. A survey shows that business want to improve the consistency of IT and improve the execution of IT related processes.(7)

Jobs in the information age may include: system administrators, operations manager, test analysts, technical architects, database analysts and java developers.(8)
Negative Impacts
An increase in the reliance on technology may lead to more jobs becoming unnecessary as we rely on automated systems more and more. New, automated systems may require fewer people to monitor it so less people will be needed in the workplace as employers try to make their business as efficient as possible. An example of this is Hewlett-Packard announcing that it would cut 9 000 jobs from its IT services division in May 2010 when its data centre became fully automated. (1)

A lot of jobs rely on human instinct, which cannot be recreated by a computer system at the present time. An example of this is fighter jet technology, at the moment fighter planes need to be operated, at least remotely by a human. However, test flights for one fully automated jets have been successful and it is possible they will see combatative service by 2018. Despite this there is no evidence to show how well they will perform against human instinct.(6)
Technology has led to globalisation, which, in many ways a good thing, has also raised unemployment rates for the less skilled workers. The advances in technology have meant that more skill is required to do the same job but at a higher level of precision and accuracy. This means that for someone to have the same chance of employment as before the advances in technology a lot more training and expertise is required, but an increase in pay is not definite.(9)

Looking for a job is very hard to find nowadays. This is due to the high rate of redundancies and the need for people to be in employment. There are many ways for you to get a job and an increasing way is for you to apply for a job online. There are many business’s that allows you to apply online such as Waitrose, other business’s also ask you to up load a CV as a digital copy.

There are many website which allow you to search for a job online one of the UKs biggest is Monster.com. Monster is primarily used to help those seeking work to find job openings that match their skills and location. (1) The way Monster operates is similar to any other job search and networking website--it provides a place for those seeking work to browse listings of jobs from potential employers based on a wide variety of search parameters such as location, experience level and industry. Job search sites also allow applicants to apply for positions directly through the job search site. (2) Monster is only one of many job searching sites, Nearly all require you to upload a CV when you have found the job you’re looking for.
Not all online jobs require you to supply a CV for example places like Hollister just require you to attend an interview and from that interview they will hire you or not. There is no need for you to hand in a CV. However places like Waitrose want you to fill out an application form. This is done on the internet and then they will read though the application and email you to attend an interview. The way in which a Waitrose application works is that they Ask a small number of question for you to fill in too start off with and if you do not fill the necessary criteria then your application will not continue. They then go on to Ask you questions about their own company and if you then succeed in that they contact you for an interview. (3)


There can be no denying that the Internet is an especially speedy way to conduct a job search. You can learn about job openings with the click of a mouse. You can e-mail a cover letter and resume to a potential employer in a matter of seconds. By devoting just an hour to an Internet search, you can learn a great deal about a would-be employer from the company's website. (4)

Up-to Date
An online job search can also keep you up to date. Things can change in a matter of minute’s new jobs open; other jobs disappear. By the time you read about a job in your local newspaper, the position might have already been filled. In contrast, the Internet is often an up-to-the-minute record of available jobs. By using the Internet, you reduce the risk that you will end up wasting your time. (5)

The cost of conducting your job search is free more often than not. You don't have to put gas in your car or pay cab fare if you use the Internet to conduct your search. (6)

Wasted time

Online job searches can be a waste of time if you're depending mainly on this tool to find work. To be effective in looking for work, you'll have to network with others. You can do this by attending job fairs, meeting with friends, volunteering in a certain aspect of your field and visiting places to onquire about jobs. (7)

Possibility of scams

Another disadvantage of online job searches is that some job postings seem too good to be true. Signs of a job scam include not needing a lot of work experience and that you can work from home and still make a lot of money. If you find the ad's claims are too extravagant, don't apply. (8)

Lack of personal interaction with people
Lack of personal interaction with people. Undeniably, working online significantly reduces opportunities for personal interaction that desk or office jobs provide. Brief chats at work, office crushes, even the exchange of barbs with co-employees ? these things you can miss out on online work, especially at-home online work. There will be more room for your internal chatter for sure. (9)
